Increase ideas portal discussions with @mentions

by Claire George

How many times have you @mentioned a teammate today? With so many digital channels for communication, proactively mentioning other people is a natural way to get someone's attention. You can already @mention teammates in Aha! software — and now, you can do the same for both teammates and users in your ideas portal.

Use @mentions in an ideas portal to have a productive exchange with the right people in the right place.

Today, when a portal user subscribes to an idea — by submitting, voting, or commenting — they receive an email when the idea's status changes or someone comments. But if you want a specific portal user or teammate to respond or weigh in, it would be nice to ask them directly. This new functionality makes it possible.

To get started, customization administrators can enable @mentions in portal settings. Once these are enabled, a portal user will receive an email whenever you mention them. (If you mention an Aha! user, they will receive an Aha! notification).

Here is a quick summary of who can use mentions and who can be mentioned:

Who can mention others?

  • Your Aha! users

  • Your colleagues who use your ideas portal (such as sales and support)

Who can be mentioned?

  • Your Aha! users

  • Your colleagues who use your ideas portal

  • All of your verified ideas portal users

The new @mention functionality in ideas portals is available for all Aha! Ideas and Aha! Roadmaps plans. Only your portal's verified employee users and your Aha! users can add mentions in portal comments. And, of course, mentions cannot be enabled if the portal is anonymous or submit-only. You can @mention in private portal comments only visible to your fellow employees — a good option if you want to dig into implementation details with your team.

Let's take a look at this new way to discuss ideas:

Ask for more information

A customer just submitted an intriguing idea, and you have some follow-up questions about their use case. Because you have enabled @mentions, simply add a comment and type the "@" symbol. You will see a dropdown of users to choose from, and each user's name, avatar, and user type will be visible. Select the user, add your question, and then await more input.

Many of you use ideas portals for managing internal feedback. Keep in mind that you can also @mention teammates in idea comments using the flow above.

Create a dialogue

Ping! Your customer will receive an email notification that you mentioned them in the ideas portal. They can reply directly to the email or click to go straight to the idea's comment and respond in the thread. Once they reply, you will receive an Aha! notification.

As you move the idea through the product development lifecycle, all idea subscribers will receive status updates. You will automatically close the customer feedback loop if (or when) you ship it.

When customers know you need additional input, they can respond in context — so you gain clarity on feedback faster.

You can do just about anything you wish to customize your Aha! ideas portal. Pin ideas you want more input on, create a private portal experience for customers, and proactively share your product plans (this feature is available on Aha! Ideas Advanced). As always, reach out to support@aha.io anytime with questions. Our team of portal pros would love to help.
