Calculate your release capacity in Aha! Roadmaps

by Claire George

Product managers aim high. You set bold goals, prioritize the right work, and push for meaningful outcomes. But even well-considered plans can break down if they outpace the team's actual capacity. That is why effective planning must start with a grounded view of what is possible.

Now, you can more accurately calculate release capacity in Aha! Roadmaps based on real availability and working days.

You can do this directly on the features board where you already define and prioritize release plans. Start by setting the release dates. Then, pull in features from the backlog and rank them in priority order. If you have individual capacity planning enabled, you can set a limit for each release — in points or time — and use the capacity bar to assess whether the work fits.

In the past, setting release capacity meant checking calendars and counting workdays to come up with a realistic number. It is now much simpler. Click Capacity below the release bar to use the new advanced calculation option. (Make sure capacity planning is enabled in your workspace settings.) Enter your team's daily capacity, and Aha! Roadmaps will calculate the release total for you using the actual number of working days.

In the example below, we plan an upcoming release for a fictitious cycling app. Features are already estimated — we now want to check whether the plan is feasible. The new capacity calculation makes it clear that the team is overloaded. The red section of the capacity bar and corresponding line show the overage. Moving the lowest-priority feature to the backlog immediately brings the plan back into scope.

When you calculate release capacity, Aha! software uses workdays and your team's daily capacity to suggest a realistic plan.

Once capacity is set, use the Individuals capacity report to balance work across the team. This view helps you understand who is overbooked and who has bandwidth so you can reassign work and avoid bottlenecks.

The more realistic your plans, the more reliable your delivery — release after release.

Release capacity calculations are available in all Aha! Roadmaps plans. If you need more advanced planning capabilities (like team-based capacity planning or scenario planning) the Aha! Roadmaps Enterprise+ plan has you covered. These capabilities are especially useful for larger organizations managing multiple strategic work streams. We would love to show you more.
