A New Way To Report on Value Delivered by Engineering

by Jeff Tucker

How do you measure the impact of your development team? This is a tough question for any technical leader to answer. Sure, you could tally up the number of features shipped over a certain period of time or track your team's velocity. But true value comes down to the positive impact your work has on your customers. Today's release helps you highlight that value with a powerful new report.

You can now report on value delivered over time in Aha! Develop — highlighting the positive impact of your team on customers and the business.

Earlier this year we introduced a new way to decide what functionality to build next based on value. The product value scorecard provides a consistent set of metrics (population, need, strategy, effort, and confidence) so product managers in Aha! Roadmaps can make objective prioritization decisions. When features are assigned to engineering in Aha! Develop, the score carries over — giving development teams clarity on the customer and business value of roadmap-driven work.

With today's update, technical leads can now use this score to report on value delivered over time. Navigate to the Reports section in Aha! Develop and open the Value delivered chart to analyze the team's contributions by initiative, workspace, release, feature type, or team member. Click on any part of the chart to see details about the underlying work items.

The new report is available for customers that use Aha! Develop and Aha! Roadmaps together. It is another way we are empowering engineering to collaborate closely with product management and be recognized for their achievements.

Let's take a closer look at how you can use the new report:

Align on feature value

Estimate the potential worth of new functionality during strategic planning. In the example below, product management is using the prioritization view in Aha! Roadmaps to update feature scores for a future release. When this work is assigned to an engineering team in Aha! Develop, the score will show on each feature card. This gives the team a clear understanding of which features matter most as they build their backlog and get to work.

Create and save as many versions of the prioritization view as you need.

Analyze value delivered

Now let's switch to the perspective of a technical lead in Aha! Develop. Fast forward to the end of the quarter and it is time to report on your team's impact. Below, we use the Value delivered report to assess progress against key product initiatives. We can drill in to see exactly which features contributed to a specific initiative — an impressive effort by the team!

Hover over any segment of the chart to see the total value delivered.
