A More Efficient Way To Close Out Sprints With Aha! Develop

by Jeff Tucker

The current sprint is over. It is time to plan the next one. But first things first — how will you handle the work that was not delivered? You might discuss those tasks in your sprint retrospective and re-estimate the remaining effort. Then you probably need to move them into the next sprint. After all, they still have to get done.

You can now move unfinished work items to the next sprint or return them to the backlog in Aha! Develop with a single click — to quickly close out the current sprint and move onto the next.

Before you complete a sprint in Aha! Develop, you must first decide what to do with any unfinished work items. Options include carrying records over to a future sprint or moving them to the prioritized backlog. Previously, you had to move each work item individually. With this update, you can now move them in bulk. This helps the team efficiently close out the current sprint and flow smoothly into the next.

Let's take a closer look at this new functionality:

Close out a sprint

Let's imagine our front-end development team is wrapping up a sprint — a handful of records remain unfinished. We want to move them to the next sprint. In the example below, we click "Complete sprint" and a modal appears with the option to move all the incomplete records in one go.

Moving incomplete records to the next sprint will not impact the burndown chart for the previous sprint.

Streamline sprint planning

Now we want to plan our next sprint. We can see that the records we carried over from the previous sprint use eight points of our 40-point capacity. We can add additional work for the team to tackle by moving over items from the top of the prioritized backlog. And with that, sprint planning is done.

Your prioritized backlog lists roadmap-driven and engineering work together in priority order.

Kick off sprint planning with a clear picture of the work you need to wrap up — then see what else you can commit to.

When the next sprint planning session rolls around, enjoy this fast and simple way to handle incomplete records. Then get back to doing what you love — building value for customers. And if you have a minute, let us know what you think. We love hearing how Aha! Develop helps your team work more efficiently and consistently.
